Under 13 Cup
Mallow United 0 Riverstown FC A 3
On a bitterly cold Sunday morning Riverstown made the trek to Mallow for the first round of the local cup. After more than a month since our last match against Midleton in December a bit of rustiness was expected. Mallow are a division ahead of Riverstown and an extremely tough match was expected.
However it was Riverstown who took the game to Mallow and were rewarded with a goal in the 10th minute of the first half when Gavin Walsh burst through the defence after a great pass from Greg Grantham and slipped the ball past the keeper. Seven minutes later Andrew Whyte broke down the inside right channel and scored a great second goal. There was initially some doubt as the ball went through the net but after the referee checked the net he awarded the goal. Riverstown were dominating the match with Eddie Barry and Kelvin Lynch masterful in midfield. On the stroke of half time a long ball into the Riverstown box resulted in a missed clearance which allowed Mallow to take advantage and score making the score 2-1 at halftime to Riverstown.
The second half began much the same as the first with Riverstown controlling the ball for long periods with great inter passing and possession. In the 23rd minute of the second half Padraig Manning gained possession of the ball just outside the Mallow 18 yard box in the inside right channel and cleverly chipped the ball into the top left hand corner of the goal to make the score 3-1. This was the final score of an entertaining match.
It was very pleasing to see the new maturity of the Riverstown players in that they were challenging fiercely for the ball when not in possession and when in possession Riverstown were not scared to keep possession and pass the ball around.

Midleton 4 – Riverstown FC A 3
After a break of a few weeks due to the inclement weather, Riverstown made the trip to Midleton where a tough match was expected against Division 1 opponents. It was a dull morning with the pitch still pretty heavy from the previous evening’s rain.
Riverstown began brightly and pushed the ball around well and created a few half chances in the first five minutes. In the 7th minute of the first half, Midleton were awarded a free kick 25 metres out which was blasted home in style. Riverstown continued pressing with the midfield of Eddie Barry and Robert McElhinney working like trojans in the midfield and a number of chances went astray when it would have seemed easier to score. However in the 20th minute Gavin Walsh finished off a good move to make the score 1 all.
Midleton struck back almost immediately and after a poor clearance they went 2-1 ahead in the 23rd minute. Immediately from the Riverstown kick-off Midleton attacked again and poor defending allowed Midleton to make the score 3-1. This was also the halftime score.
The second half began with both teams having chances to score and Riverstown having the best opportunities but unfortunately not able to convert them. In the 9th minute of the second half Midleton scored their fourth goal and the writing appeared on the wall for a heavy defeat.
However Riverstown rallied and with a few astute changes began to apply pressure on the Midleton defence. Aaron N’Dongo replaced Padraig Manning up front, Conor Murphy moved from left back to left midfield in place of Shane Healy with Jack Redmond going to left back, Kelvin Lynch moving from right back to central midfield with Robert McElhinney coming off and Cian Ahern going to right back and Declan McCarthy replaced Gavin Walsh up front.
In the 21st minute of the second half, Aaron N’Dongo finished off a good move to make the score 4-2. Riverstown kept up the pressure and in the 28th minute of the half Conor Murphy made it 4-3. It was all Riverstown now and with an expected 3 minutes of injury time, who knew what would happen. Unfortunately Midleton held on to win the game 4-3.
It was a fantastic match with superb effort from all of the Riverstown team. Well done to all and bad luck in not getting a rub of the green.

On a bright and extremely hot afternoon Riverstown took on Carrigaline on their new astro turf pitch. The match began in a lively manner with Riverstown immediately going on the attack and were rewarded with a goal in the 8th minute with a well taken Andrew Whyte goal.
Padraig Manning was having a storming match at wide right midfield and was creating havoc in the Carrigaline defence whenever he received the ball. Eddie Barry was having a storming match in central midfield and was ably assisted by Robert McElhinney.
Much of the match was being played in midfield at this stage and Riverstown were dominating with the midfielders spreading the ball around. In the 24th minute Eddie Barry scored a cracker of a goal putting Riverstown 2 up.
In a rare attack Carrigaline broke down the left and slipped the ball past an advancing Michal Sady’s in the Riverstown goal but Greg Grantham was covering on the goal line and cleared away the danger. Riverstown went 3 – 0 up in the 29th minute when Eddie Barry added to his tally with a corker of a shot from 25 metres that gave the Carrigaline ‘keeper no chance.
The second half began much the same, with Riverstown pressing and were rewarded in the 3rd minute with Andrew Whyte also converting his second goal.

Glounthaune United 0 – Riverstown FC 3
After their defeat at the hands of Everton two weeks previously, Riverstown went into this second round National Cup match looking to redeem themselves. This local derby was played at the Glounthaune home pitch and was expected to be a hard fought match after the drawn first match of the season between the sides.
The pitch was fairly wet after the night’s rain and there was a fairly strong wind blowing down the pitch. Glounthane won the toss and elected to play with the wind in the first half.
The first half was contested mainly in the midfield with Riverstown shading the possession. Eddie Barry and Robert McElhinney worked like Trojans and continually played the balls wide to Shane Healy and Padraig Manning who were constant thorns to the Glounthaune defence. Glounthaune were only able to create a few sporadic forays into the Riverstown box which were easily dealt with. The score at half-time was 0-0.
The second half began with Riverstown gaining quick possession and the ball being played wide to Padraig Manning who crossed for Gavin Walsh to head goal ward where a Glounthaune defender, instead of clearing it kicked it into his own net in the 2nd minute, 1 – 0 to Riverstown.
This unsettled Glounthaune and Riverstown maintained pressure and were rewarded with a free kick seven minutes later. Eddie Barry took the free kick and the Glounthaune goalkeeper unfortunately could not hold the shot and it trickled over the line for Riverstown’s second goal in the 9th minute of the second half.
The Riverstown defence of Greg Grantham, Stephen Kennedy, Jack O’Neill and Conor Murphy worked well and kept the Glounthaune forwards well away from their goals and Michal Sady’s cut a lonely figure in the Riverstown goals and was only called into action midway through the second when Glounthaune were awarded a free kick which he ably dealt with.
Andrew Whyte and Gavin Walsh, Riverstown’s two front runners kept probing the Glounthaune defence who held firm.
In the 23rd minute of the second half Robert McElhinney scored a cracking third goal from 25m for Riverstown. Riverstown then rang the changes, bringing Kelvin Lynch into the midfield for Robert McElhinney, Declan McCarthy for Shane Healy, Jack Redmond for Conor Murphy, Cian Ahern for Jack O’Neill and Jonathan Mullane for Gavin Walsh.

Everton U13 2 – Riverstown U13A 0
Riverstown were brought to earth with a bump in their away match against Everton played in Togher. The match was played a fairly fast tempo although Riverstown had the better of the opening 15 minutes. The Everton defence was really well marshalled by Gary Boyle, the Cork Kennedy Cup centre half which broke down any attempted Riverstown attacks.
Riverstown were awarded a free kick just outside the Everton 18 yard which was unfortunately wasted after the referee had asked for a retake after the Everton wall broke too quickly.
Right on half time Everton went ahead after the Riverstown defence thought one of the Everton forwards was off-sides and stopped playing which allowed Everton to score.
The second half began with most of the play taking place in midfield and Riverstown again failing to take advantage of a mistake by the Everton defence when their goalkeeper dropped the ball. A few minutes later in the 17th minute Everton scored their second when the Riverstown defence failed to stop a ball being crossed from the left. This allowed a close up, second goal to be scored. This remained the score until the end of the match with no further chances for either team.

This set the tone for the match with Riverstown constantly pressurising the Blarney goal. Riverstown were repeatedly blown up for off sides when in handy positions to score. Riverstown eventually scored their second goal in the 15th minute when Andrew Whyte scored his second goal.
