| The Coochie Cup - 2007 |
The Third Annual Coochie Cup took place on December 29th
at Nemo Rangers All Weather
Facilities and it was once again a major success.
This year there was a record 21 teams taking part and indeed there could have
been many more, such is the interest in playing in this special event. It
is a great testament to the memory of Kieran “Coochie”
McGlynn and shows how much respect and love that this fine
young man had garnered in his short life.
We must thank his parents Peter and Margaret
and his brothers Gary and Brian, for allowing
his memory to be celebrated by such a great tournament.
The weather, while cold, was ideal for the day’s soccer and the rain
held off all day. (Thanks Coochie).
It was non stop playing from 12 midday until 5pm with four groups of teams.
The top side in each group got through to the semi-finals. These were Brooklodge
MSL, Tramore, Hazelwood
Gunners and The Gooners
but the standard was excellent all day and indeed most groups went down to
the last game.
Of course the order of the day was fun and participation and there was a huge
crowd of spectators all day long. Group 4 was a very popular bay as we had
the “Senior” Legends side in
action and they really gave the crowd fantastic entertainment. Also it was
great to see the Riverstown Women’s
side participating again this year as well as the RFC Under
16 squad.
The semi-final draw say Brooklodge get the better of a much
fancied Tramore side by 2 – 0 while in the other semi-final,
Hazelwood Gunners and The
Gooners had to go to penalties before Hazelwood
eventually won through.
The final was a tough but fair encounter and the football was of the highest
standard. After a scoreless first half it was last years beaten finalists,
Brooklodge MSL, who finally got on the score
sheet and eventually won out 3 – 0.
The Junior Coochie Challenge
Cup for Under 13’s
was also run in the afternoon and we had sides from Riverstown,
Leeside/Knockraha and Glounthaune
taking part. Riverstown 1 side took the
Cup but on the day all these youngsters were winners. Many thanks to our neighbouring
clubs for participating.
The presentation of trophies and medals for the Senior and
Junior took place in BK2 that night where
everybody who participated got a memento.
The trophy for the day’s Top Scorer
went to Alan Goggin of The
Gooners while the Player Of
The Tournament was Brooklodge’s
keeper and captain, Diarmuid O’Brien.
We would like to thank all who were a part of this great occasion. The organising
committee, the referees who braved the cold all day, the people who made and
brought sustenance to the players during the day. SuperValu
and BK2 for their very kind sponsorship. Nemo
Rangers for the use of their fabulous facilities and of course
the McGlynn family for their continuing support of this annual
event. And not forgetting all the men and women who once again gave their
all on the playing pitches. It’s about the young people of Glanmire
and their great dedication and loyalty and will always be so. It’s their
tournament.

| Riverstown FC - AGM |
The Club's AGM was held at Fitzgerald's Vienna Woods Hotel on October 25th and proved a great success. In front of a large attendance, new Chairman John Gilroy announced plans for the development of a new home for the Club at Eastcliff Road, near Glanmire Village.
The AGM began with a talk from the FAI Childrens Protection Officer, Michael Lynam who brought it home to the attendance the importance of putting children first, before any thoughts of winning.
This was followed by the Treasurer's report and then the election of Officers for the coming year who are as follows:
Chairman: John Gilroy
Vice Chairman: Finbarr O'Sullivan
Secretary: Noel Costello
Assistant Secretary: Eamon Breen
Treasurer: Tony Holland
Assistant Treasurer: John O'Mahony
P.R.O: Niamh Johnston
Club Executive for 2007/2008:
Back Row: Eamon Breen (Assistant Secretary), John O'Mahony (Assistant Treasurer), Michael Lynam F.A.I. Child Protection Officer (Guest Speaker), Finbarr O'Sullivan (Vice Chairman)
Front Row: Tony Holland (Treasurer), John Gilroy (Chairman), Noel Costello (Secretary) Missing is Niamh Johnston (P.R.O.)
Then the plans for the new ground was launched in a power point presentation which showed pictures of the area. John Gilroy told the room that a lot of groundwork had already been done over the past few weeks by the acting officers and it would be available for training on in the next two weeks. He thanked the many people outside the club who gave time and resources into the development of the ground which included Mr. Niall O'Donovan, Mr. Tom Heneghan, Mr. Donal Kelleher, Mr. Dan O'Shea, Mr. Kieran Murphy, Mr. Joe Coleman, Mr. Michael Kearney.
He also thanked Mr. Pat Geaney for the continuing use of our pitch at Knockraha and Mr. Pat McKelvey, Principal of G.C.C. for the temporary use of their ground for training.

| Another major
success for the Senior Women's side |
Riverstown Senior Women have ended another campaign on a major high having captured the prestigious Kevin Barry Cup, beating Novartis 2 - 0 in a classice final at Turner's Cross. This was a deserving finish to the season as the girls were just beaten to the Division 1 title by one point to Passage. Considering Passage got a walkover in their final game against Buttevant, it could have been a third League title in a row. Winning the Cup was a great consolation to the squad after a year of hard work. Well done to all the players, the managers Eamon Breen and Finbarr O'Sullivan and especially this year's coach, Peter Mullins, who had them in great shape and playing marvellous football. It augers well for Women's Football in Glanmire and we all look forward to next season already.
| Mixed results in League and Cup games |
It's early doors yet in this season but already the Under 13 Division 1 side are the form team having won 4 out of 4 League games so far. Well done to Greg Dooley and the lads. The Under 16's bounced back from their defeat to Cobh to win a great derby against Mayfield United. The Under 12 Premier side are also ticking over nicely with a win, draw and defeat coming out of their opening three games. The Under 12 A side are on a learning process this year and will improve as the season progresses. The Under 14's are having a sticky start to their campaign and have yet settled into their season while the three Under 11's sides are having mixed luck. But what matters is that each week we have a number of teams out there competing in their respective Divisions and all are enjoying their football.
Who said Riverstown FC were dead in the water.........The Phoenix rises.....
| Senior Women's League |
Riverstown meet Passage in the Semi Final of the Kevin Barry Cup with Novartis awaiting the winners at Turners Cross. Riverstown have beaten Passage twice this season, once in League and once in the Steve Quinn Cup and have also drawn with them in the League. Passage went on to win the League by one point over Riverstown after getting a walkover from Buttevant in their final game. This was a major dissapointment for Riverstown but the girls can again be proud of their season as they remain unbeaten in League football now for three years running.
Hopefully they can get some revenge with a Cup win.
| Manchester Cup |
Congratulations and well done to the Riverstown Under 14 team who won the Manchester Shield over the Easter weekend. Skipper Kevin Burns rose the shield to huge applause in the University of Manchester grounds. Riverstown beat Villa from Waterford in a penalty shoot out, with Burnsey himself converting the winning penalty. Well done to all the under 14 players who battled hard and to Pat Murphy and all the coaches involved with the under 14s.
Well done also to the 3 other teams who travelled to Manchester. The Under 12s had a great tournament winning all 3 games on Saturday, including a great victory over Scottish side Hamilton Academicals. However on Sunday they lost 2 -0 in the semi final of the Manchester cup, but all said they played great football and managers Greg Dooley and John Cronin were real proud of their performance. The Under 13 A team also played lovely football, losing unfortunately to a golden goal in the second period of extra time in another semi – final on Easter Sunday. David Hardwick and James O Keeffe were among those to impress for the Under 13s. And finally not forgetting the Under 15 team, again beaten semi finalists losing 2 - 0 on Sunday. Another great performance to keep the travelling Riverstown fans happy. Finally a big thank you to Pat Murphy for all his hard work organising the trip, and to the 64 players who travelled, your behaviour was excellent, you were a great source of pride to yourselves, your families and Riverstown Football Club.
